How Long Does It Take to Show Up in AI Answers?

Getting crawled by an AI engine is not the same as getting cited by one. Engines can ingest a page weeks or months before naming it in an answer, if they ever do, and most timelines you'll see quoted in this category describe the first, easier thing rather than the second, harder one. Searches for how long SEO takes to show results are up roughly 3,100% year over year as of this week, a sharp rise that reads as more buyers asking a timeline question before committing budget, not fewer.

The number that separates hype from tide

The single most useful figure we have found on this comes from a controlled study cited in a July 2026 survey. On a site where some pages received an AEO intervention, total ChatGPT referrals to the site rose 5.7 times over. That is the number a case study would lead with. But untreated pages on the same site rose 3.5 times over on platform growth alone in the same window, meaning most of that 5.7x was the tide rising under everyone, not the intervention. The controlled, time-series estimate of the intervention's own effect came out to a 1.8 times multiplier, with a confidence interval wide enough that a conservative placebo test returned p = 0.16, not fully ruling out noise. That is the honest number, and it is a fraction of the number a vendor would show you in a pitch deck.

What we've watched happen to our own numbers

We have measured our own citation rate weekly since June 2026 and sat at zero for thirteen straight weeks before this page existed, across a locked set of buyer questions run through four engines. That streak is not evidence the work doesn't work. It is evidence that ingestion precedes citation by a longer window than most timelines assume, and that a zero on week three means nothing about week thirteen.

What would change our mind

If a controlled test showed citation moving inside two to four weeks of a structural change, with the lift holding after we account for platform-wide growth the same way the 1.8x figure above does, we would say so and revise this post. We have not seen that result yet, on our own data or anyone else's we trust.

Final thoughts

The honest timeline is measured in months, not days, and most of what looks like fast movement in this category is the tide, not the technique. We are re-measuring this page's own eight questions at fourteen and thirty days after publish and will report both readings, whichever way they land.
