What Is Answer Engine Optimization?
Answer engine optimization, AEO, is the practice of earning a direct, named citation inside an AI-generated answer, from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity, rather than a ranked position in a list of blue links. It is functionally the same goal as generative engine optimization, GEO. The difference is lineage, not substance: AEO grew out of the search-marketing industry's own vocabulary, GEO out of a 2023 academic paper. Use whichever term your buyer already uses.
Why two names for one thing
"Answer engine optimization" pulls about 720 Google searches a month as of this week, up more than tenfold over the trailing year, a faster climb than GEO's own trend over the same period. That gap is a clue about who is searching: AEO reads like the term an SEO practitioner reaches for first, since it slots next to "search engine optimization" without asking the reader to learn a new acronym family. We use both terms interchangeably in our own work and let the client's vocabulary pick which one shows up in a given piece of content.
What actually earns the citation
Regardless of the label, the mechanism is the same across every engine, and it is not universal. ChatGPT cites rarely and leans on Wikipedia when it does. Perplexity retrieves and reranks live pages, with Reddit dominant and a strong bias toward content published in the last 30 days. Google AI Overviews reuse Google's own organic ranking and skew toward Reddit, YouTube, and Quora. Gemini decomposes a prompt into sub-queries and grounds each one in live Google Search. Claude searches via Brave and favors depth and third-party corroboration over a brand's own self-description. Only about 11% of source domains get cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity for the same query, which is the single clearest piece of evidence that there is no universal AEO playbook, only a per-engine one.
The measurement problem this creates
Because each engine's behavior is genuinely different, a single AEO tactic that works on Perplexity can do nothing on ChatGPT and the reverse. That is why this page exists as a measurement instrument and not only a content page: eight locked questions, tracked across four engines, on a fixed schedule, with a ninth question held back as a control that never gets a page slot. A claim that AEO "worked" only means something if it is read per engine, against a baseline taken before the content shipped.
Final thoughts
AEO is not a discipline separate from GEO, and neither is a discipline separate from the older craft of writing content an engine can retrieve, trust, and quote accurately. The acronym is a convenience. The measurement underneath it is the only part worth defending.
